Learn English with Santa: 3 Christmas Idioms that You Need to Know

7

- God damn online shop.

Hello, this is Santa Claus here

and Jack from.

- [Cameraman] To Fluency.

- To Fluency (chuckling)

has asked me just to make this little video

just to wish you guys a happy Christmas.

And very, very merry Christmas.

Now, apparently he has this channel

that teaches English?

Yep, okay, now just to say

that my accent's originally from the USA.

I won't tell you exactly where

but after living in the North Pole for a few years

and all those little British elves,

it might sound a little bit British here and there.

Now, what else am I going to do?

- [Cameraman] Maybe teach them some idioms.

- I can teach these guys some idioms.

Sure thing, okay, first idiom Christmas related.

A white Christmas.

A white Christmas.

Now, this might sound a little bit strange

if somebody says I'm really hoping

for a white Christmas this year.

Don't think ill of this person.

Instead, bless their heart,

all they want is for a little snow on Christmas Day.

So to get a white Christmas means

to get snow on Christmas Day.

Now, what's the next?

I'm just looking at some notes over here.

Hope you don't mind.

Oh, to go cold turkey.

One of my favorites.

Now, this is used throughout the year

but it's Christmas related

because people in the UK apparently

eat turkey on Christmas Day.

I'm a vegan now.

But anyway, to go cold turkey mans

to give up something suddenly.

Something that you shouldn't be doing.

(chuckling)

Like smoking those cigarettes.

So if you wanna give up cigarette,

smoking that trash,

you just say I'm gonna go cold turkey.

I'm not gonna do any of those nicotine patches.

I'm just gonna stop smoking,

that's it, just stop smoking.

To go cold turkey.

In fact, there's one time when I had to go.

We won't talk about that.

The last one,

the last one can be a little bit rude

but it's a real good one

just to have up your sleeve

which is another idiom

which we won't talk about here either.

Now, to go cold turkey,

no, we just did that one.

(chuckling)

Santa gets a little bit crazy at this time of year.

The last one, I can't see my notes,

here it is.

It's the thought that counts.

It's the thought that counts.

Now, if you get a present that you do not like,

you can say well, it's the thought that counts

which might upset the person that got you that present

but basically it's saying that the thought

of buying me a present

is more important than this piece of that you got me.

You know what I'm trying to say.

Someone got you something real.

You know what I'm trying to say.

Then you can just say it's the thought that counts.

It might upset them but who cares anyway?

You get to use an idiom.

Is that all you want me to do, Jack?

- [Jack] Like and subscribe?

- Oh, I almost forgot.

Like this video, subscribe to this channel.

Get down into that description,

get your free book, "The Five Step Plan for English Fluency"

and learn some good British English,

maybe a little bit American as well

and then maybe I'll see you this time next year.

If we're gonna do this again, I don't know.

But I gotta get going.

Mrs. Claus doesn't like me doing these kind of things

and I don't like doing them either

but I'm doing them for Jack.

Apparently he's one of the best teachers here on YouTube.

I don't think so but maybe you guys do

and that's why you're here.

I'm not gonna judge ya.

I'm not gonna judge ya.

Peace out.
